Eight Dimensions of Wellness: The Spiritual Dimension

This dimension of wellness is a broad concept that represents one's personal beliefs and values, the desire for meaning and purpose and a sense of balance and peace. The spiritual dimension recognizes our search for meaning and acknowledges purpose in human existence. For many, this dimension is fulfilled by cultural, religious and/or spiritual traditions. For others, it may also involve the development of a deep appreciation for the depth and expanse of life and natural forces that exist in the universe.

Spiritual well-being can facilitate success in other areas of wellness, too. Your optimal level of spiritual wellness can be achieved in a number of ways:

  • Try journaling. Don’t be afraid to put down on paper how you feel and what you want in life.
  • Create your own personal mission statement. Recite it aloud on a daily basis until it becomes second nature.
  • Read inspirational/motivational books or quotes.
  • Spend some time daily in quiet reflection or meditation. Step away from your devices, even if for just a few minutes each day.
  • Meet with others of like minds and beliefs, whether that be a religious organization, self-help group, etc.
  • Actively practice gratitude. Routinely recognizing others’ attributes can create a sense of peace within and help you seek to behave in similar ways.
  • Donate — food, clothing, blood — whatever you can!
  • Volunteer. In giving back, you gain more than you give.
  • Adopt an animal in need or volunteer at an animal shelter.
