Eight Dimensions of Wellness: The Physical Dimension
This dimension of wellness is probably the first dimension that comes to mind when someone brings up the term “wellness.” It involves recognizing the need for physical activity, proper diet and nutrition while discouraging the use of tobacco, drugs and excessive alcohol consumption. It also focuses on recognition of physical and physiological signs of stress, learning to assume responsibility and care for minor illnesses and knowing when professional medical attention is needed.
While great suggestions aimed at improving your physical wellness are abundant, here are a few general suggestions that can put you on the path to better physical health and gear you towards more specific goals aimed at your own personalized needs:
- Prepare healthier meals and snacks. Try making your own meals and snacks instead of buying those that are processed or pre-made.
- Make time every day for a physical activity you enjoy, even if just for a few minutes.
- Join a gym or a fitness class.
- Track your fitness progress on MyFitnessPal or a similar free website or app.
- If you smoke, quit. If you drink alcohol, limit how much you drink. Your employer or insurance provider may have programs available to help you achieve cessation.
- Work up to walking 10,000 steps a day. Get a pedometer to help track your steps and keep you mindful and motivated.
- Try a healthy food or recipe you have never tried before.
- Fill half your plate fruits and veggies instead of meats or carbs.
- Wash your hands regularly.
- Stay hydrated — aim for eight 8-oz. glasses of water daily.
- Eat slowly to help avoid overeating and to truly savor what you’re consuming.
- Plan an indulgence. It's important to treat yourself once in a while!
- Keep regular bed times and wake-up times. Keep a consistent routine, even on weekends.
- Know your family medical history and share it with your doctor.
- See your doctor regularly and follow any guidance or prescriptions they prescribe. Don’t have a personal care physician? We can help find one for you!
