The Eight Dimensions of Wellness: The Environmental Dimension
This dimension of wellness focuses on our lifestyles as they relate to our environments, such as home, work and social locations. Environmental wellness can include many different elements and mean many different things, depending on our perspectives and preferences. For some, environmental wellness focuses on harmony within and awareness of your actions and their impact on the earth’s environment. For others, achieving environmental wellness might involve creating a safe environment in your surroundings. This is a dimension of wellness that many often overlook but, if out of balance, can impact your total wellness.
Optimal environmental wellness can be achieved in a variety of ways, such as:
- Surround yourself with things you enjoy (collections, candles, scents, colors, etc.).
- Keep your living and work areas tidy. Tackle one chore daily to ensure you aren’t getting behind in this area.
- Utilize natural light, fresh air and live plants.
- Start to recycle or create a compost pile.
- Conserve energy at home, in the car, etc.
- Take a self defense class or carry safety devices such as pepper spray or a portable flashlight.
- Wear reflective gear if out at night, and use the “buddy system” if possible.
- Update workplace safety protocols and refurbish outdated or broken supplies.
- Volunteer for community events or with organizations that support your local community.
