Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Medical Direction
Sudden cardiac arrest can strike anyone, anytime, anywhere.  According to the American Heart Association, nearly a quarter of these deaths could have been prevented if an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) had been available. BarnesCare provides AED medical direction for companies that develop defibrillation programs.

BarnesCare works in conjunction with the American Red Cross which is an approved trainer for workplace AED programs and provides assistance through all phases of implementation. A successful workplace defibrillation program takes more that just an AED. A complete program includes education and planning, medical oversight by a licensed physician, advice on purchasing AEDs that are best suited for the responders and for the workplace environment, training and ongoing AED maintenance.

Body Substance Exposure (BSE) Hotline
Workers are exposed to many hazards in the workplace. One of the most disconcerting is exposure to infectious diseases. The risks for workers who come in contact with blood and body fluids include but are not limited to: Hepatitis B and C, and HIV and, the potential for exposure are increasing.

Now there is a place to turn, 24 hours a day, to have a work-related exposure assessed. This revolutionary service minimizes the time between an exposure and the administration of post-exposure prophylactic (PEP) drugs, thus decreasing the chance of infection. For less serious exposures, it provides workers with a reliable source of information and support to get them through an unsettling, anxious time.

Within 15 minutes of calling the Hotline, a registered nurse, trained as a body substance exposure specialist, will contact the caller. The BSE Specialist talks with the worker about the exposure and the source of the blood or body fluids to assess the seriousness of the situation. A standard protocol is followed to ensure a comprehensive assessment is completed. The BSE specialist works under the direction of an infectious disease physician's orders and will refer to them for certain situations.

If the exposure warrants PEP treatment, the worker will be referred to a nearby clinic or emergency room that stocks the appropriate drugs.

The BSE specialist provides counseling and factual information to minimize the exposed worker's fears and to help them make informed decisions.
