  Stan Musial

Stan "The Man" Musial -- venerable St. Louis Cardinal -- wins the National League MVP award in 1943, 1946 and 1948

1946 -- Richard A. Sutter, MD, opens the Sutter Clinic -- one of the first practices in the country specializing in the treatment of work-related illnesses and injuries -- in the old City Hospital

  Chuck Berry

Chuck Berry plays the popular Cosmopolitan Club in St. Louis throughout the 1950s, helping launch the rock-and-roll era

1950s -- Post-war boom in American industry generates a growing need for industrial medicine services; Richard A. Sutter, MD, develops a specialty in hand surgery and his practice thrives

1959 -- Sutter Clinic opens an expanded downtown St. Louis facility at 819 Locust; the practice remains in the same location until 1990

  Arch

Construction of the Gateway Arch begins February 1963, and was completed October 1965; the north tram to the top opened July 1967, and the south tram was completed
in 1968

1960s -- A national political movement to establish standard occupational safety regulations gains momentum; Sutter Clinic works with local companies to develop injury prevention programs, a forerunner of modern occupational health practice

1968 -- Bridget Warren begins career with company; she currently serves as customer service consultant and is BarnesCare’s senior-most employee with 38 years of service

Vernon Balster, MD, begins his 34-year career with the company; Dr. Balster  later serves as medical director from 1984 to 2002

  Missouri Botanical Gardens

The largest traditional Japanese Garden in North America opens in 1977 at the Missouri Botanical Garden

1970s -- President Richard Nixon appoints Richard A. Sutter, MD, to serve as the only physician advisor on the committee developing the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA)

1971 -- H. Bryan Rogers, MD, begins his career with the company; Dr. Rogers succeeds Dr. Balster as medical director in 2002 and serves in that capacity today

  Union Station

St. Louis Union Station -- once the largest and busiest railroad terminal in the world -- re-opens in 1985 after an extensive restoration

1981 -- The Sutter Clinic becomes the first freestanding occupational health facility in the United States to receive the prestigious Health Achievement in Industry Award from the American Occupational Medical Association

1984 -- Barnes Hospital purchases Sutter Clinic and Barnes/Sutter HealthCare is established; Barnes/Sutter HealthCare expands to West St. Louis County by acquiring an existing medical practice on Lindbergh Boulevard at Schuetz Road

1988 -- Barnes/Sutter HealthCare expands to Southwest St. Louis County and opens a facility in Fenton on Westpark Drive

  Rams

The National Football League is welcomed back with the St. Louis Rams in 1995

1990 -- The original downtown St. Louis practice moves to 401 Pine Street, formerly known as the Lerwick Clinic

1991 -- Barnes/Sutter expands to midtown with construction of a 9,000 square-foot clinic at 5000 Manchester Avenue

1993 -- BJC HealthCare is formed when several local health-care facilities merge, and the occupational health division is named BarnesCare; the West St. Louis County location moves to a larger facility on Page Service Road

1994 -- BarnesCare merges with Christian Hospital Health Technologies

1996 -- Gary Payne joins BJC as the first Vice President of Corporate Health Services, which includes BarnesCare; Payne continues in that role today

1997 -- BarnesCare merges with Macon Medical Center; BarnesCare opens its first location in St. Charles, Missouri, a joint venture with MedFirst Urgent Care

1999 -- BarnesCare founder, Richard A. Sutter, MD, dies; he was 90

  Busch stadiums

2000 -- Orthopedic physicians are added to BarnesCare medical staff, improving patient outcomes and client service

  • Downtown St. Louis clinic moves to current address, 909 North 14th Street
  • St. Charles County clinic moves to current location, 1901 Trade Center Drive in St. Peters
  • Fenton clinic moves to current location, 1391 Smizer Mill Road

2001 -- National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) designates BarnesCare as a research partner; the two organizations begin a three-year study on preventing slip and fall injuries

2002 -- BarnesCare becomes founding member of Employer Health Network (EHN), a national network of independent occupational medicine providers

2003 -- BarnesCare web site is launched

2005 -- Workers’ compensation reform signals new era for Missouri employers; BarnesCare highlights specific programs and services to help prepare client companies
